The Healthy Thinking SKILL

HEALTHY THINKING. This may seem obvious, and for some, this may come naturally. However, healthy thinking IS a SKILL. If you have ever encountered a disappointing situation or had a day filled with tough circumstances it can be a CHALLENGE not to replay your negative thoughts and emotions throughout the day. It takes SKILL to center your thoughts.

If you are experiencing some anxiety about upcoming tasks or opportunities you may be consumed with worry and doubt regarding the outcome from your attempt. It takes SKILL to conquer your anxiety.

There is a passage of scripture, Philippians 4:8-9 that gives a BLUEPRINT for healthy thinking.

Philippians 4: 8-9  “FIX your thoughts on what is true, honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. THINK about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me-everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.”

This scripture instructs us to FIX our thoughts, or in other words it will require SKILL, intention, and effort to manage and direct your thoughts in a healthy way. Additionally, you will need some automatic healthy default thoughts. So let’s review 2 of the 6  types of healthy thoughts we need below (combined in no particular order)…

TRUE & RIGHT thoughts.

TRUE thoughts are based on facts and not the imagination. Developing TRUE thoughts means that when you begin to imagine negative outcomes in your mind, center yourself by identifying the FACTS. Once you identify the facts, incorporate this into your thinking so that it is RIGHT and without ERROR.

The next time you recognize a negative thought I want you to write it down. After you write down your thought, list FACTS that prove your thought is TRUE. Continue to rewrite your thought until the only thought that is left is RIGHT and TRUE.

Congratulations on the WORK you’re doing to develop healthy thinking SKILLS!
